Confessions of a Birmingham Business Coach

I wonder what confessions you’re expecting from a Business Coach? I think some people have misconstrued ideas about coaches; that we’re all (annoyingly?!) positive people 24 7, that there are never any problems or challenges in our lives and business and we have the answers to all issues. Well…the latter is true! However…

I don’t leap out of bed every morning in a great mood ready to embrace the day. Come on, who does? 9 times out of 10 I wake up still tired. Maybe one baby and a 4 year old…or maybe I’m just not a morning person, or that I just need a LOT of sleep. Anyway, to counteract this, I have my to do list written out for the week and I will work out each morning the essential tasks I want to get done that day – the things that will make me feel professionally and personally fulfilled. That way when it comes to writing in my gratitude journal at the end of the day I can close this in one fulfilling loop.

Facebook just doesn’t work for me.

That’s not to say it doesn’t work for other businesses and business owners. I just haven’t found a way to get it to work for my business in the way I would want and anticipate, i.e. it would have to give me a really significant return due to the time spent on it. Facebook is a serious time stealer. It works for me in other ways – I run private facebook groups, which are brilliant for helping me and my business coaching clients keep in touch in between sessions, and also for me to keep in touch with what’s going on locally both for business and pleasure. Basically I’d rather spend my marketing time elsewhere.

I have a business coach. Of course I do, everybody who wants to keep at the top of their game employs someone to help them achieve that. Each year I engage with a coach to help me bridge gaps in my knowledge, business, personal development in an area that I feel requires the most attention at that particular time. This year I’ve been working with an online marketing coach, as my business goal this year is to understand more about online marketing and developing online products. So far it’s been an excellent investment. Watch this space…

I tend to steer clear of Birmingham networking events. Although Birmingham offers a plethora of different networking events, I prefer the more fun, relaxed, yet structured atmosphere of local town events that happen in and around Sutton Coldfield, Tamworth etc. Birmingham is a great city with loads to offer, so I find other ways to network and meet like-minded professionals and business people in the city. If you know (or run) a fun, relaxed, yet structured event during the day in Birmingham City Centre, please do feel free to invite me along!

The moral of the story is: if there are things you think you should, could, be doing, but you don’t currently; then, stop beating yourself up about it. Think about ways around the issue, how else could you be achieving the same result completing it in a way that works better for you?

Clare Whalley celebrated 10 years in business in 2017. A great milestone to achieve. She graduated with an International degree in English and Education and went into corporate life to pursue a career outside of teaching. Successfully passing a rigorous graduate scheme into a blue chip company; working in several positions across team management, customer service and sales roles. A working trip to India helped her decide to resign, retrain and set up her own coaching and training business.

Clare now lives in Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham with her two young children, Isabelle and James and her husband Rob.
