How NLP Changed my Career
At the back end of 2006 I was seriously contemplating a career change. Unsure how, what, where, when etc. my ex boss recommended I check out NLP (Neuro-linguistic Programming) “just look it up and see where it takes you, I think you’ll be really interested in it.” Not sure he realises now, but it was that, that caused a profound catalogue of positive effects in both my career and life.
For those who don’t know what NLP is, I always describe it in the same way: it’s modelling successful behaviour. So, if you see someone who is really *confident* for example, what is it they do, what do they say to themselves, how do they carry themselves? What can I borrow from them to use for myself. There are loads of really useful and simple to implement techniques into your everyday personal and professional life.
NLP was the catalyst to my career change. I read a great book – Be your Own Life Coach, Curly Martin and it was then I knew that NLP was definitely a belief, tool, something I could use in my future career. At that stage I was just unsure how. A month later I booked myself on to an NLP practitioners course and that’s when I found out the ‘how’. There’s lots of free taster sessions around, so if you’re interested in finding out more book yourself onto one.
The first thing NLP did for me was a) gave me confidence and b) the realisation that I DID have choices – I wasn’t just stuck in my current career for the next 30 years waiting on pay-cheque after pay-cheque. It enabled me to look at things around me a little bit differently. The confidence transpired in many different forms: when presenting and communicating with others, but mainly gave me the confidence to know that if my career change was to not work out for me this time, that I would find my way through to the right career, business; whatever I ultimately decided. It not only helped me to make the bold decision to leave my safe, well-paid career, but to stick by it and know it was the ONLY thing for me to do at that time.
So, if you’re sat in a job, career you hate right now. Please remember that you always have choices, there are always other options. Sometimes you have to go looking for them…
